Hi! Slowly but steadily learning how to use lj, hopefully I'll get the hang of it sometime this millenium...

My fics can all be found here at AO3, and my tumblr here. Feel free to add me if you want to chat :)
Here are the fifteen fic recs I did for the March challenge on hurt/comfort bingo. My prompts were hostages, nightmares, and insomnia.

Fic: Soon

Title: Soon
Word Count: 813
Rating: R
Warnings: Murder, slightly cracky violence
Summary: Based on this tumblr post by [livejournal.com profile] 5leggedcricket: 'There is no way that Mary Collins was Merlin’s first kill. Have you seen the ease with which he killed her? He didn’t even have to think about it. What exactly had Merlin been up to in Ealdor?'

I was reminded I wrote this recently when we had the Merlin rewatch! So here's my alternate take on The Dragon's Call :)

Heroine Big Bang! Big, Mini & Tiny Options.
Author Signup | Artist Signup | FAQ

I only found out about this recently but it seems like an awesome thing to do if you have any fic or art ideas lying around for a Merlin lady (or a lady of any fandom). My plan is to write a Gwen POV fic in which her and Morgana set out to rescue Merlin and Arthur after they've been taken hostage. Aiming for mini-bang level (which is 5k - you can also write 1.5k, 10k, or 25k) but we shall see.

Anyway, just wanted to put it out there in case anyone else was interested, sign ups are open until April 1st :)
Hey guys, was hoping to solicit some opinions! I tend to automatically write in present tense but I wonder if it puts people off. I'm about to embark on another long fic which feels like it probably should be past tense but I have to fight all the time while I'm writing not to slip back into present! Any thoughts?

[Poll #2034519]

On a side note, do you think different tenses suit different kind of fics?
I will finish this meme, so help me God.

25: Music: Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Only music with no lyrics! Otherwise I get hella distracted... Mushroom sent me some amazing creepy fairytale music when I was writing my Merlin Horror entry, and that helped me get in the mood a lot, so maybe I should look into assembling some playlists.

26: What is the oddest (or funniest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

Depression era bank robbers for my Bonnie and Clyde Morgwen au! Also depression era bare knuckle boxing (apparently I have a thing for the 1930s), which was super fascinating! I found so much cool stuff out and then basically none of it could go in my tiny 750 word pornathon entry. One day I will use all that research...

27: Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer

I like to write in bed! But my back hates me for it. And I usually write by hand and then transfer. I write on my lunch break at work now, which is good because I'm usually too tired when I get home... but also I have to hunch over my notebook obsessively whenever anyone walks by, in my eternal and constant paranoia that anyone actually gives a shit about what I'm doing.

Officially lost track of where I am with these *flails*

21: Sequels: Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

OH THE GUILT. I swear I have been putting this question off because there should have been a sequel to A Prayer Before Birth like a year ago and I am a bad person. After Merlin Horror and Merlin Mpreg fest I'm gonna do it (except When the Road Runs Out needs another chapter, and I have to finish my Humans fic and my abo fic and oh nooooo)

22: Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

Does Merlin Writers' Tropes Bingo count as a fest? If so, I did and it was fabulous. I think I doubled the amount of Merlin fics I've written and it was an brilliant experience. Summer Pornathon was also awesomely fun, and thanks to that I can say I pretty much have no NOTPs in the Merlin fandom anymore...

But the best fest experience was this year's ACBB. Because that's how I started going on Chatzy and actually talked to people in the Merlin fandom, and then Mushroom agreed to collab with me, and literally my whole experience of fandom has completely changed in the last few months and it's been really amazing. Like a little gap has been filled that I didn't know was missing. /end gush

23: When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

AO3, and occasionally FF.net for sentimental reasons.

24: Betaing: How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

I've only ever had one beta! It was for ACBB and she was grand :) But I find having someone beta your work quite a nervewracking experience. I should do it more though because I went on an old fic the other day and found I wrote 'peaked his interest' instead of 'piqued his interest' and I was FILLED WITH MURDEROUS RAGE.

18: Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

Hmmm... nowadays it might be more likely to be other people or kink memes or fests etc. When I started, it was just me. I came into the Merlin fandom knowing I wanted to write a fic about Merlin having anorexia and I wanted to write one about Arthur being abused at home, and then after that I just sort of played it by ear.

The most specific bunny I had was meeting an awesome lady farmer who told me how lambing season worked, and instantly knowing I had to put that in a fic somehow. Thus City Slicker was born...

19: When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

I have an ideas document and it is such a hot mess. Lines I wanted to save for later, odd paragraphs of fic, prompts, things people said in Chatzy... and then just a single note at the bottom that says: 'Catboy Merlin'. Sigh.

20: Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

YES! Let me rave forever about how fantastic the Merlin fanartists are. My tumblr is basically all art reblogs, and I get bunnied a lot by them. But to be honest I am nervous to write a fic for them sometimes in case they don't like it! Which is silly and I should get over it and just write that one Whimsycatcher fic I am burning to write because damn...

May as well just resign myself to doing these in chunks, I am so rubbish!

15: Warnings: What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

Definitely rape, graphic violence, suicide etc. I'd rather overwarn than underwarn nowadays, even at the risk of being spoilery.

And my strangest warning would have to be for Arthur having sex with an eight inch tall fairy...

Sidhe pic
You'll be pleased to hear this is not the fairy Arthur has sex with

16: Summaries: Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

They're mostly fine, and then sometimes they just DO NOT WORK. The summary for Gentle, Gentle needs to go die in a hole. And my ACBB one sounded a bit like a bad film trailer but oh well.

17: Titles: Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

I really like coming up with titles! I mainly use lines from poems, play titles or song lyrics. A Prayer Before Birth was called something entirely different for the first chapter, because it got to like 6am and I couldn't think of a decent title so I just slapped some rubbish placeholder in. I also remember having extreme trouble naming The Tulip Thief.

I usually give each chapter a title too. I have a Sherlock fic where all the chapters are play titles, for no reason whatsoever...

12: Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

No! Although The Wasting Game is technically an adaptation of a poem by Philip Gross, if that counts...

13: Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I write more modern aus than canon for Merlin (usually due to extreme laziness and inability to be historically accurate). It's no secret that the canon of the show is a bit, er, lacking sometimes on plot and characterisation, and probably the greatest thing about Merlin fanfic is how skilfully some people can fill the gaps canon left.

I definitely see the Arthurian legends through the lens of Merlin now! Probably one of the greatest things about seeing them through that lens is the rehabilition of Guinevere from one-note adulteress to the delightful Gwen we all know and love <3

14: Ratings: how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

As high as it can go, baby. *slow motion wink*

Wow, I suck at keeping up with this! Have three more.

9: Pairings: For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

The O.C. - never wrote any but it probably would have been Ryan/Seth, I think they were my first real slash pairing... Summer/Seth is also good, and then Ryan/Taylor too (sorry Marissa :/ )

Veronica Mars - Logan/Veronica was my main ship, but lowkey warm for Cassidy/Logan as a dark ship. I never wrote Veronica/Mac but I wish I had because I ship it HARD

Mac and Ronnie rocking out gif

Sherlock - Only wrote Sherlock/John but I wouldn't be averse to a bit of Sheriarty, or any ship involving Sally Donovan, who is queen of the world and my heart.

Merlin - Merthur is top ship, I don't think I'll ever get tired of writing them. I always love a bit of Morgwen and am slowly building up more fics with them (I think I'm on 4 now). I've only done one fic with Arthur/Elyan/Merlin but they are my OT3 and I really loved writing them, so I think that'll be my third.

10: Pairings: Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

I really like Merdred but I haven't done a successful one of them yet! Flycatcher was technically Merdred but you couldn't exactly call it romantic... So, yeah, I need to give that ship a go.

I'm writing Elena/Mithian atm and I'm a bit nervous about that! Because I definitely ship it but I chose Mithian as the POV character and honestly I think I would have had a better handle on Elena...

I don't think I would write a pairing I didn't like! Unless I was up for an extreme challenge (some people were talking about the challenge of writing Uther/Arthur fluff in Chatzy the other night, but I don't think that's one I'll be taking up...)

11: Genre: do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

Hurt/comfortttttt. Give me all of it, there can never be enough!

Getting there! Slow and steady...

I was back in the suffering dome yesterday so have two more today!

7: Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

Not really, although I suppose Uther being quite nice at the end of The Wasting Game was a bit of a change in opinion. I usually go for the maximum 'Uther suuucks' route, but I think there I had more of an image of him as a stressed father, trying to do right by his kids and failing most of the time.

8: Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

I think I've only really written two - Daniel and Evan, Merlin's foster brothers in After the Heart Goes - a fic I did about Merlin growing up in care. I enjoyed writing them and they weren't a big enough part of the story for them to ruin it if everyone hated them!

The cool thing about the Merlin fandom is that we often use one episode characters who barely got any screentime in our fics, and it's a bit like writing an OC when authors decide what characteristics to give them. I genuinely love seeing people's take on, like, Mary the Tavern Keeper

I was in the suffering dome yesterday so here are 5 and 6 together!

5: If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?

Mordred insinuated himself quite far into a fic I wrote recently called Happy Hour, to the point where it almost became a Merdred fic. WHICH I AM TOTALLY COOL WITH. But I kind of wanted it to be a gen fic so I had to give him a gentle rap on the nose and tell him to return to his assigned seat.

6: When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

When I write non fandom stuff in RL, I vastly prefer writing women. Almost all of my other stuff is very woman orientated. But my fanfic is overwhelmingly male and I've been thinking a lot about why recently. Smarter people than me have spoken on why we're drawn to men and male perspectives in fan culture so I'll simply say that I'm trying to expand my horizons a little and leave it at that!

4: Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

Okay, I am drunk and my brain is mush but I'm determined to do this challenge so I'm just gonna say that Merlin usually tries to muscle his way in on stuff, and I usually let him because, you know, love that guy. But I should probs give him less free rein...

Weirdly, I'm writing Merlin as quite unpleasant for one of the fests coming up. Not dark, not angsty, not sadistic or power mad or corrupted. Just... not that nice. AND IT IS SO WEIRD. He's been my pivot character for so long that to write him as some kind of unimportant, not very nice side character is super bizarre (I really hope it works...)

3: For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

The O.C. - ha I'm sorry it's just hilarious to be reliving my time as an OC fangirl. I would say Ryan, because I always tend to cleave to the most vulnerable character on any given show...

Veronica Mars - again Logan for the vulnerable thing, but I'm sad I never got to write more Veronica perspective because she's probably one of my all time fave characters. She'd be really interesting to characterise I think, because there's so many layers. Plus, she's the Queen of Snark and that's my jam.

Sherlock - I am unrepentant Moriarty trash, god rest my soul. As long as he is a character on that show, I will probably continue to watch it, no matter how far Moffat tests my patience... Anyway his speech patterns are a lot of fun to write, and you have the bonus of reading them out loud in his accent, which is always enjoyable ;)

Merlin - it's hard to choose between Merlin and Arthur, although sometimes I feel like you can put a more original spin on Arthur's characterisation because canon left so many gaps wide open. My Arthur is usually slightly damaged in some way, and needs looking after (see above: most vulnerable character wins my undying affection).

I've also been writing Elyan recently which has been awesome, even if I'm still trying to settle on his characterisation. He's coming out quite whimsical at the moment, which is a bit unexpected... but not necessarily unwelcome.

2: Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

The O.C. - 1 (rip in peace, my friend)
Veronica Mars - 2 (1 WIP)
Sherlock - 4 (2 WIPs)
Merlin - 28 (1 WIP)

Oh dear, now I just feel guilty about all my wips... I need to finally finish one of those Sherlock fics because I've been dragging it out for years. But I'm so firmly ensconced in the Merlin fandom at the moment that I find it hard to write for anything else.

I am working on a short Humans fic though, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility of writing 00Q in the future...
